Tajweed (علم التجويد)
Tajweed is the Islamic science of reciting the Quran with proper pronunciation, intonation, and articulation, along with some other rules. It is very important as far as reciting the Quran is concerned. Without it, there is a risk of mispronouncing words and altering the meaning of some verses of the Quran.
This great significance of Tajweed is evident in the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the practice of his companions (may Allah be pleased with them all). We will explore in this article whether there is any command for Tajweed in the Quran as well as some of the Hadiths about Tajweed in some detail.
Why do we need Tajweed
Tajweed, the science of proper Quran recitation, is crucial for Muslims because it ensures accurate pronunciation and preserves the original meaning of the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of reciting the Quran with Tajweed, and scholars believe that reciting the Quran with Tajweed is a religious obligation (fard ayn) for all Muslims.
Verse 73:4 of the Quran (Surah Al-Muzzammil) instructs believers to recite the Quran with measured recitation (tarteel), which is interpreted as recitation with Tajweed.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The best of you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it." This emphasizes the importance of both learning and teaching the Quran, including its proper recitation (Tajweed). Additionally, the Prophet's (PBUH) own recitation is considered the standard for Tajweed.
Key Aspects of Tajweed and its Importance:
Tajweed rules help maintain the exact wording and pronunciation of the Quran as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
Correct recitation ensures that the meaning of the verses is not distorted due to mispronunciation or incorrect application of rules.
Reciting with Tajweed enhances the beauty and impact of the Quranic verses, facilitating a deeper connection with Allah.
Learning and applying Tajweed is considered a good deed, and Muslims believe it leads to increased rewards from Allah.
